March Newsletter 2022
Dear Families,
March is Women’s History Month, which commemorates and encourages the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in American history. It was designated in 1987 by the U.S. Congress, in recognition of women’s many accomplishments. If you are interested in learning more about Women’s History Month, check out: https://womenshistorymonth.gov/
Women of the past who are typically remembered during this month of history are Americans like Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, and Georgia O’Keeffe. For a more present-day example, we can look to Erin Jackson, who made history just a few weeks ago at the Winter Olympics in Beijing, as she took gold in the women’s 500m speed skating race. Personally, I stand on the shoulders of founder and former director, Edie DesMarais, who responded to our community’s needs more than 45 years ago by gathering supporters and resources together in order to establish The Children’s Center. We wouldn’t be here if it hadn’t been for Edie’s vision.
In recognition of the month, I love how the National Museum of American History is presenting Girlhood (It’s complicated) where they are exploring how girls changed history in the five areas of politics, education, work, health, and fashion. To see how girls have used their voices to make a difference, go to: https://americanhistory.si.edu/girlhood
Also, watch for a few social media posts in the weeks ahead that celebrate some of our favorite women. In the meantime, here’s to all the women I am privileged to work alongside with each day here at the Center!
Sincerely,
Teri Ann
