March Newsletter 2024
Dear Center Families,
Did you know that March is Women’s History Month? Designated in 1987 by Congress, we get to pause and recognize women’s many accomplishments, as well as encourage the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in American history. If you are interested in learning more about Women’s History Month, check out what The Library of Congress and national museums are doing at: https://womenshistorymonth.gov/
Women of the past who are typically remembered during this month of history are Americans like Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhart, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Georgia O’Keeffe. When I think more locally, founder and former director, Edie DesMarais, comes to mind. Edie responded to our community’s needs 50 years ago by gathering supporters and resources together to establish The Children’s Center in April of 1974. We wouldn’t be here if it hadn’t been for Edie’s vision.
In recognition of the month, I love how the National Museum of American History in 2022 presented Girlhood (It’s complicated) where they explored how girls have changed history in the five areas of politics, education, work, health, and fashion. The exhibit is now traveling to different states through 2025. To see how girls have used their voices to make a difference, go to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History companion website: https://americanhistory.si.edu/girlhood
In the month ahead, let’s welcome spring (on March 19) AND recognize the girls and women who make a difference in our world. Personally, I am thankful that I get to work alongside a bunch of them each day here at the Center.
With kind regards,
Teri Ann
