March Newsletter 2023

Teri Ann Cox
Executive Director of The Children’s Center

Dear Center Families,

I happened to be in D.C. for a few days during winter break and thanks to the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, I was reminded that March is Women’s History Month. Each joined in commemorating and encouraging the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in American history. Women’s History Month was designated in 1987 by Congress, in recognition of women’s many accomplishments. If you are interested in learning more about Women’s History Month, check out: https://womenshistorymonth.gov/

Women of the past who are typically remembered during this month of history are Americans like Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosa Parks, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Georgia O’Keeffe. When I think more locally, founder and former director, Edie DesMarais, comes to mind. Edie responded to our community’s needs nearly 50 years ago by gathering supporters and resources together to establish The Children’s Center. We wouldn’t be here if it hadn’t been for Edie’s vision.

In recognition of the month, I love how the National Museum of American History last year presented Girlhood (It’s complicated) where they explored how girls have changed history in the five areas of politics, education, work, health, and fashion. The exhibit is now traveling through 2025. To see how girls have used their voices to make a difference, go to the companion website: https://americanhistory.si.edu/girlhood

In the month ahead, let’s welcome spring AND recognize the women I am privileged to work alongside with each day here at the Center.

Sincerely,

Teri Ann
